Choosing your first e-bike
Your first e-bike should match where you will ride, not the highest torque figure on a spec sheet. Commuters, leisure riders and trail riders need different motors, geometry and battery sizes — and a shop that can service the system after purchase.
Step 1 — Define your riding
Trail riding needs a full-power e-MTB with proper suspension. Commuting on flat paths may suit a hybrid e-bike. Be honest: if you want to ride Cannock Chase on weekends, do not buy a town bike with knobbly tyres.
Step 2 — Understand assist and range
Range depends on assist level, rider weight, terrain and temperature — not brochure figures alone. On e-MTBs, eco mode suits fireroad climbs; turbo drains batteries fast on technical trails. Test ride if possible.
Step 3 — Size and weight
