How to choose your first mountain bike

Buying your first MTB should be boringly practical: set a budget, be honest about trails, get sized properly, and buy from a shop that will set the bike up — not just box it. This checklist works for riders visiting us from Leicestershire, Derbyshire, and Staffordshire.

Step 1 — Budget all-in

Include helmet, pedals (if not included), and a basic tool kit. Allow £100–£200 above the bike price for essentials. Cycle to Work can extend your budget — see our dedicated guide.

Step 2 — New vs used

New bikes from us arrive built, checked, and supported by warranty. Used bargains skip setup and may need immediate brake/bleed or bearing work — factor workshop costs.

Step 3 — Size and reach

Use our bike size guide and visit for a standover check. Between sizes? Smaller often suits new riders building confidence; larger suits confident climbers — we can advise.

Step 4 — Where you will ride

List your top three riding spots. Mild towpaths suggest a hardtail or XC bike; regular trail centre visits justify full suspension. Match the bike to reality, not aspiration.
