Gravel bike vs road bike — which should you buy?
The gravel vs road debate is really about surfaces. Smooth tarmac favours road bikes; mixed lanes, towpaths and light trails favour gravel geometry and wider tyres. Most UK riders overestimate how much smooth road they actually ride.
Geometry differences
Road bikes use longer reach and lower stack for aerodynamic efficiency. Gravel bikes add stability with slacker head angles, shorter reach and higher stack — more comfortable on rough surfaces and when carrying luggage.
Tyres and speed
Road bikes typically run 25–32mm tyres; gravel bikes 38–45mm+. Wider tyres add comfort and grip on rough lanes but add rolling resistance on smooth tarmac. Swapping tyres helps but cannot fully change frame geometry.
One bike or two?
